"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved
the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and
cleanse her with the
washing of water by the word, that He
might present to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or
wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and
without blemish..."
Ephesians 5:25-27

The washing by the word is a gentle, loving cleansing of the mind by the power
of Jesus through holy scripture.

The phrase "
of water", in this instance, means "of baptism".

I would like to show you how physical baptism and the baptism of our minds
are similar in principle- they both bring transformation to the believer's life.

The bible states that we were "buried with Him through baptism into death",
Romans 6:4. Physical baptism through immersion in water is more than a
public gesture symbolizing our commitment to Jesus, it is a spiritual washing
that frees us from the dominion of our sin nature through death that we should
no longer be slaves of sin.  After we have been buried through baptism into
death with Jesus, crucifying our
old man, we are then resurrected with Him;
that is, when we are raised up from the waters of baptism, we are resurrected
into a new life that we are to live to God and to righteousness.
Romans 6:5,6

The baptism of our minds through immersion in the water of the word is
meant to free us from spiritual defilement, worldly corruption, and our old, carnal
ways of thinking.  This is not a one-time baptism as is the physical baptism, but
rather a process of continual internal cleansing and purifying that renews and
washes our souls whenever we take in the word.

Both types of baptism are works of liberation performed by God
.
These baptisms are meant to free us from specific hindrances that encumber us
when we enter the kingdom of God as believers.  If we could not have freedom
from the enslaving power of sin and from the restrictions of a carnal mind, we
would not be able to successfully walk in our new life with
Jesus Christ.

"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by
the
renewing of your mind..."  Romans 12:2

The renewing of the mind is a process of mental reconstruction accomplished
by the power of the word as we study it.  God's word changes us into a new
kind of life in Christ Jesus as we are progressively healed from our former
corrupt state.  This renewal gives place to a transformation that literally
causes our mind and life to come into complete agreement with the mind
and life of Christ.

As we are divinely transformed by the word, we are promoted into a greater
capacity for spiritual truth and an ever-increasing ability to perceive divine
things. Our understanding, feelings, and judgement are brought into the
likeness of Jesus, and as the likeness of Jesus is formed within us, people
will be visually impacted by the manifestation of His life through ours.
